How to Add Solana to MetaMask

solana metamask

Solana is a layer 1 blockchain and is one of the most widely known Ethereum competitors. It’s received a ton of funding from deep pocketed VCs in the space, who still have massive incentive to see the network succeed.

If you’ve used other layer 1 and layer 2 protocols such as Avalanche, Binance Smart Chain, Matic, or Polygon, you know you can add them to MetaMask. So you may be wondering how to add Solana to MetaMask as well.

The short answer is MetaMask does not currently support Solana. You have to download a Solana-specific wallet such as Phantom or Sollet to connect to Solana.

We’ll dive into how to do so and why Solana doesn’t work on MetaMask.

Can You Add Solana to MetaMask?

As mentioned, MetaMask does not support the Solana blockchain. This is because Solana is not an Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain. EVM-compatible chains are written in the programming language Solidity, whereas Solana is written in Rust.

Neon Labs is a startup building an EVM-compatible cross chain between Solana and Ethereum. Once it’s fully live, dApps built on Ethereum will also work on Solana. It’s still early in its development but keep an eye on it.

What Is the Best Solana Wallet?

Phantom is the most popular and best Solana wallet. It’s free to download, has a slick UI, and is easy to use. It works just like MetaMask, allowing you to send and receive crypto.

But it also includes many additional features. It also supports NFTs, allowing you to see your Solana NFTs right in the app itself. You can also exchange tokens in the wallet itself, and even stake them directly through the app.

If you’re wondering if Phantom is safe to use, it’s passed the institutional legitimacy test. Phantom recently raised $109M in a Series B round.
